This chapter and the rest of the chapters in this manual are aimed at more advanced users that want to manually control the aspects of their pre-processing and compression. If you are unfamiliar with QuickTime compression, you may want to read Chapter 5 -The Beginning User before proceeding.
Opening a movie
Open the Movie To open a movie, select Open from the File menu. Movie Cleaner will open and analyze the selected movie, and a Source Movie window will appear on the screen.
Source Movie Play Controls: The controls for the Source Movie window are the standard QuickTime controls. You can control playback volume, play, pause, frame advance, frame rewind, and use the slider to move to any point in the movie you choose.
Source Movie Data: Below the QuickTime controls is a data bar which contains information about the source movie. The movie's duration, size (in bytes) and average total data-rate (in kps) are displayed. Clicking on the "more info triangle" will display more detailed information about the video and audio characteristics of the source movie. Clicking on the "more info triangle" a second time will close the extra information.
Using Settings Groups
Settings Groups: All of the parameters that you can change in the Advanced Settings window together make up what is known as a "settings group." By allowing you to easily change and save settings groups, Movie Cleaner makes it possible for you to quickly select all your parameters at once. This saves you time, as well as allowing you to make sure that your movies are consistent. Movie Cleaner comes with some pre-installed settings groups such as "Cinepak for 2x CD-ROM", "Indeo for 2x CD-ROM", and more. You can save your own settings groups and modify them, as well as delete groups you no longer need.
It is not necessary to have a movie open before working with settings groups in the Advanced Settings window. If you do have a movie open, the current settings will be automatically applied and saved to that movie. If you do not have a movie open, the settings you select will not be automatically applied to any movie, but can be saved and retrieved for later use. If you open a movie that has settings associated with it, the settings in the Advanced Settings window will change to the movie's settings.
Creating New Setting: To create a new group of settings, select New Settings from the Settings menu. You will be prompted to name your new settings. The new settings group will have the same parameters as the previously active settings group. For example, if you have the "Cinepak for 2x CD-ROM" setting open and decide to make a new setting called "Indeo for 4x CD-ROM", the new group will start with the "Cinepak for 2x CD-ROM" parameters. You may then modify these as you wish and save it when you are done. Starting with the current settings is a way to save you from having to reset every parameter from scratch each time you make a new settings group.
Modifying Settings
Saving Settings: To modify a settings group, simply select it from the Settings menu, and change the desired parameters. As soon as you change an existing setting, it will be indicated by adding a ".mod" to the end of the name. This lets you know that you have changed a setting from your original. All changes are continually saved, and the original settings are still available in case you want to go back. You can change a modified setting back to its last saved parameters with the Revert command (see below).
When you are done modifying the setting, you can leave it as a ".mod" setting, or you can select Save from the Settings menu to replace the unmodified version with the new version. If you want to keep the original version, as well as the new modified version, use the Save As... option from the Settings menu. This will prompt you for a new name for the modified group. After the new group has been saved, the original group remains modified until you revert it (see below).
Reverting Settings: You can change any modified setting back to its last saved format with the Revert command in the Settings menu. You can only revert settings that have a ".mod" in their name.
To Delete Settings: If you want to delete a settings group you have previously saved, select Delete Settings from the Settings menu. A list of saved settings groups will appear, from which you can select the particular group(s) you want to delete. You can shift-click to select multiple settings.
